| Presentation | Dr.
Marcia Zucker from International Technidyne Corporation (ITC) gave an
excellent lecture entitled: POCT Coagulation Instrumentation and Regulation.
She began by reviewing the common coagulation tests performed in
the laboratory and then the tests that were available at the point of
care. Dr. Zucker
continued with an in-depth explanation of ACT testing and finished with
tips for managing the coagulation point of care testing program.

| Group Discussion |
The
founding members began with the question to the group of whether to
allow vendors to attend the meetings if they are not the sponsors.
After a lengthy discussion, it was determined that the current
policy (vendors may attend the lecture, but must leave before the
sponsor presentation and group discussion) would remain in place, but
that a break would be built in before the vendor presentations to allow
exiting time for the visiting vendors. A quick discussion ensued regarding Pam Hill’s JCAHO presentation. It was agreed that most institutions verify the manufacturer’s quality control ranges for their glucose testing.
A
member inquired as to whether the POCT Manager was responsible for
assisting with the care plan of an institution.
We emphatically agreed that it was NOT a point of care
responsibility. The
question was raised as to whether an acceptable percentage of difference
between repeats for glucose testing is listed in the policy.
Several members said that fasting results should be + or – 10%
for the repeat and if not, a lab value should be obtained. The
new wording of the CAP checklist was discussed for the POC section. See www.cap.org for new
POCT checklist. It
was asked if anyone does Calibration verification for ACT testing.
Very few do. QC procedures for fecal occult blood testing were discussed. Many have the performance monitors documented in the patient chart as “QC OK” or they use the meditape system. Most subscribe to a CAP survey for FOB testing. |
