Chronic Kidney Disease: The value of early detection Jolanta Kunicka

Currently, and estimated 20 million Americans have chronic kidney disease (CKD), although many are unaware as the disease is almost always clinically silent in the early stages.  An additional 20 million more are at risk due to factors such as hypertension and diabetes.  Early identification is critical to maximize the value of therapeutic intervention, improving patient outcomes and reducing the emotional and financial burden of end-stage disease.  Identification of microalbuminuria is the primary initial indication of incipient kidney damage.  Rapid methods to reliably detect microalbuminuria without the need for a 24-hour urine collection are discussed.
