|
|
|
|
Nearly 40
people attended the first SC POC Network Meeting!
|
|
|
Winter
conditions and a driving rainstorm didn’t dampen the spirits
of the nearly 40 people that attended the inaugural meeting of
the South Carolina POC Network on Friday, February 6 at the
Greenville (SC) Hospital System.
Many of the attendees came from as far away as
Charleston, SC (4 hours) and were treated to a full day of
presentations, food and discussions on today’s point-of-care
issues. A
continental breakfast was provided by Becton-Dickinson (vacutainer
division). The agenda
for the day
included:

“Planning
a Collaborative POC Meeting”
|

|
Ms.
Wyer opened her presentation by discussing many of the things
required to plan and implement a successful POC meeting.
As a core member of the Virginia POC Coordinators, Ms.
Wyer has been instrumental in organizing many of the six VAPOCC
group meetings that have taken place since the group formed in
May 2001.
From mission statements to themes, locations to
invitations, and roles to responsibilities, Ms. Wyer touched
upon each of the facets that lead up to and make POC meetings
successful.

Given
the initial success of the first SC POC Network meeting,
discussions then focused the future of the group and more
specifically, the next meeting.
Attendees were given the opportunity to discuss program
topics, meeting locations, and dates and times that would work
best for them. Although
details still need to be completed, the general consensus for
the next SC POC Network is as follows:

“Roundtable
Discussions”
|
|
|
Attendees form there groups for
roundtable discussions on various POC topics.
|
|
The
next session was an interactive discussion on major issues in
POCT. Attendees
were split into 4 groups and each was given a specific topic to
discuss. These topics included Connectivity, Billing and
Reimbursement, Competency, and Regulatory and Accreditation.
After
meeting in small groups to discuss their topic, one person was
appointed by their group to present their findings and share
with the other groups. This
exercise proved to be very interactive and brought out much
discussion among the attendees.
Once
discussions were completed a roundtable
representative reported
on their group's findings (right)

Following
lunch (sponsored by Abbott Diagnostics), Ms. Wyer spoke in
detail about “Bridging the Nursing/Laboratory Gap”.
Her presentation was interesting and informative,
touching on the many aspects that contribute to a good
relationship between nurses and laboratorians.
Communication in all forms: spoken, written and
electronic was listed as one of the most important aspects in
“bridging the gap”.
She
also discussed formation of a POCT Committee, the importance of
access to procedures and policies on the intranet and ways for
POC personnel to become “highly visible” within their own
organization. All of these tactics are important mechanisms for building a
good working relationship with nursing.
Ms. Wyer also touched on the importance of connectivity
and total quality management for POC testing.
She concluded with a review of resources available on www.pointofcare.net
and other informative mediums such as the POC listserve through
AACC.
