Summary:  In this session attendees:

  • Reviewed glucose monitor use in the home, general care hospital, adult intensive care and neonatal intensive care environments. 

  • Discussed the issues impacting accuracy needs within each environment

  • Examined the evidence in the evolving field of glycemic control as it relates to accuracy needs of glucose monitors. 

Objectives:  

  • Define uses of glucose meters in home, outpatient, inpatient ICU and NICU settings

  • Weigh benefits of glycemic control vs. adverse effects of hypoglycemia

  • List various proposed and established guidelines for glucose meter accuracy

About our presenter:  Brad Karon, MD, PhD is the director of the Hospital Clinical Laboratories, Point of Care Testing, and Laboratory Services (phlebotomy) at Mayo Clinic in Rochester Minnesota.  He is an Associate Professor of Laboratory Medicine and Pathology at Mayo Clinic.  Dr. Karon's primary interest is in critical and point of care testing.  Dr. Karon has published and reviewed articles in many scientific journals, holds multiple education leadership positions at Mayo including vice-chair of education and associate program director of the pathology residency, and is past-chair of the Critical and Point of Care Testing division of AACC.
