Dan has more than 25 years experience as a certified medical technologist. He was a laboratory manager for 10 years before becoming the laboratory safety officer for Sentara Healthcare, a system of twelve hospitals and more than 20 laboratories and draw sites in Virginia and North Carolina. As “Dan the Lab Safety Man” he provides consulting, education and training throughout the U.S. and Canada. He has written many peer-reviewed articles and laboratory safety reference books. As the "super hero of lab safety," Dan's goal is to improve safety in labs around the world!

Point of Care Connectivity: Untangling the Web

Understanding that Point of Care connectivity is crucial for the current needs of bedside testing, expanding the Point of Care Coordinator basic knowledge of IT concepts, definitions and Facilities’ requirements is fundamental to a successful program.

In this presentation, Leandra will discuss what are the elements needed for an instrument connection and will give you tips on how to obtain them. I will also share with you how to communicate with IT and teach you how to understand their needs. When evaluating and purchasing new POCT instruments, you will want to keep these requirements in mind. Troubleshooting methods can include

  1. verifying instrument connections and configurations for both wireless and hardwire applications;
  2. working with POCT vendors on interface issues; and lastly
  3. working with your local IT specialists at your facility.

When you arrive at the intersection of Children’s Drive and Rockland Road...

  • Please turn left onto Rockland Road, and proceed to East Gate (At the traffic light at the Ronald McDonald House, on left).
  • Enter the Employee Parking Garage on your right.  There is no charge for parking.
  • From the parking garage there is a path that takes you to the employee entrance.
  • Inform security that you are attending a conference in the ARB auditorium
  • Follow the KEYPOCC signs on the ground floor and take the elevators to the 1st floor.  The auditorium is located in the “ARB” building
