The Connectivity Industry Consortium (CIC) has announced that
its standard for point-of-care testing connectivity has been
approved by the NCCLS (www.nccls.org)
and is now available as “POCT1-A”.
In addition to its adoption as an NCCLS standard,
sections of the CIC specification have been adopted and approved
by the IEEE (www.ieee.org)
and HL7 (www.hl7.org)
standards organizations. Through
this broad adoption of the CIC-developed standard, the
Consortium has achieved consensus within the healthcare
community on standard, extensible and cost-effective
connectivity technologies and practices.
For
vendors of point-of-care devices and information management
systems, POCT1-A describes standard messages, protocols and
technologies that can be used to link point-of-care devices to
clinical information management systems. By supporting and
implementing these standards, manufacturers may ensure
multi-vendor interoperability.
For
buyers and users of point-of-care devices, the NCCLS POCT1-A
standard provides a means of easily linking any point-of-care
device to any database, without having to implement a different
communication system (wiring, computer, software, etc.) for
managing each new device. In
other words, new devices should seamlessly link into your
existing data management systems without additional expense,
provided they are CIC or NCCLS POCT1-A compliant. For this
reason, it is important to ask if your vendor is “CIC or NCCLS
POCT1-A Compliant” for all new purchases of POCT devices and
if your current devices are going to be retrofitted to be
compliant with the standard.
